Dear friends of Bear River Farms

This year is the most difficult year for farming, since we started our little operation 5 years ago. Through the weird weather conditions in spring we were forced to seed our oats in the first week of June, instead of the end of April, as usually.

In June we were able to make all the hay we need for the winter, but only because we were gambling and taking chances in between the rainy days. It seemed that the weather forecasts were changing every 15 minutes.

While our rye and winter wheat was standing good, the rain in August caused that the seeds are slowly starting to sprout on the stems. The only day when we were able to harvest them, the motor of the combine wasn’t working properly – so we had to give up that day. If it does not heat up again, we probably loose all our crops.

But there were also good things happening this year. The biodynamic workshop in spring this year was a success. We had a group of 12 interested people here on the farm. And even it was raining we could make, burry and dug out all biodynamic preparations.

Two of our cows got their first calves in July and the young chickens that we breed out of our own eggs are looking wonderful.

While the farmers markets are slower than the last 3 years, more and more people are getting concerned about their sources of food. The demand for a save source of food is rising and the number of people who want to become co-owners and co-producers of Bear River Farms are getting more and more.

There will be another event this fall at Bear River Farms:

The Biodynamic Fall Workshop on Sunday October 2nd
